News: Temporary voluntary cessation of scallop fishing in Blacksod Bay

This evening the department  contacted Coastwatch to say that  the North West Regional Inshore Fisheries Forum meeting agreed that there will be a temporary voluntary cessation of scallop fishing in Blacksod Bay.

We welcome this step by fishermen.
It is still up to government to lead and provide adequate legislation  for  our designated Natura 2000 and Ramsar sites. At minimum  that  must be to close sites to  use intensification and new damaging activity  without permit or control. If such activities are  considered they must be assessed as required under the habitats directive  and the assessment results used to refuse or control the activity.
