Update - survey confirmed, plastic tops, seagrass and Sargassum

We have just got confirmation that the Dept of Housing will support our autumn shore survey again. So to a great survey from Sept 15th to Oct 15th with a bit extra for weather injury time. Given the odd weather pattern we could easily have a fine warm September.

We will send out a note when bookings open around August 10th and so hope that you might be able to join the Coastwatchers from right around the coast again.

There are two things which you might be able to do before the survey:

(1) Help tackle marine litter and waste of materials at source: Suitable for any weather, any public place over the next 4 days:

  • Look for a place which sells coffee/tea in single use cups with lids.

  • Take a lid and look for the embossed symbol in a triangle which tells what material it is made of (NB if you are curious to find out more look here. You might also take a photo of the codes you are most likely to encounter, or cut it out if you can do with a bookmark.

  • Photograph the lid with material symbol clearly showing

  • Send the photo with location - general area if you don’t want to give name of a place away either by email survey@coastwatch.org or share on Coastwatch social media

  • As an extra – if you have a favourite reusable coffee/tea cup which might persuade those still hooked on single use to switch, could you photograph that too and send it? Ideally it’s a selfie with you and cup – but that is up to you. Those pictures are for a poster, so only send what you agree we can use to push for an end of those ‘free’ single use cups and lids.

This is for very quick turnaround. We hope to get 100 pictures in about 4 days and will shout once we have those. They will then be examined to create a simple pie chart of materials in use. We want to put out a press release of results and issues that raises, plus a poster of alternatives to single use plastic cups and lids from your pictures.

(2) Help locate seagrass as wonderful find and/or Sargassum muticum an invasive alien seaweed which is rapidly spreading. See seagrass and brand new Sargassum leaflet just produced by our team, download here.

Thank you!

Karin, Bernie and Coastwatch core team.
